Here’s something you don’t see every day — a British couple has discovered that not only are they aunt and uncle but that they are also the grandparents of the same children. Lynn and Charles Lowden learned that Lynn’s sister’s children were actually her own son’s offspring. Now, before you start calling Jerry Springer, it’s not as bad as it might sound at first.
It turns out that the couple’s late son provided the sperm for his aunt’s partner to get pregnant. The couple wanted to have children and Charles Lowden came forward. Unfortunately, Charles died last year after what should have been a routine operation. “When our Charlie died we were broken hearted,” lamented his mom. “We thought we had nothing left of him. But there is something left of him.”
Charlie and his aunts kept the arrangement from his mother but when he passed away, Lynn’s sister decided to tell her. “I couldn’t go through life not telling her,” Sarah Ashman explained, “because they are her grandchildren. Lynn had been so upset. She said she hadn’t anything left of Charles and we decided to tell her.”
So while Charlie is gone, his parents are taking solace in the fact that he did leave behind two grandchildren. It’s an added bonus that the two kids are also doing double duty as a niece and nephew. At the very least, it’s a beautiful legacy to have helped his aunts and created two beautiful children in the process.
