Crazy in Labor

Having a baby is a crazy time in anyone’s life.  Whether it’s your first child and you don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into or your third and it’s all been-there-done-that, it’s surely going to be a crazy, hectic time.  And yet, many of us manage to fit in some wild stuff in between labor pains.  There are the usual things like not getting any medication to help with the pain (you put me in that much pain and I’d be breaking into the prison pharmacy if I had to) or eating a hearty meal only to throw it up shortly thereafter.

When my wife was due with my daughter, I had just arrived at the San Francisco Free Folk Festival with my first child when she called to say she was in labor.  Now, the festival was something I’d been looking forward to for quite a while and I had just run into an old friend I’d not seen in years, so I was in no hurry to leave.  On top of that, the festival was literally three blocks from the hospital while my wife was at home all the way across town.  So it seemed perfectly logical to me that she could drive over to the hospital and I would meet her there after hearing a couple of bands and saying hi to a few friends.  For some reason that I’m still not entirely clear about, she didn’t like that idea.  She seemed to think that a woman in labor couldn’t operate a motor vehicle, let alone find parking in San Francisco.  So I left the festival and went home to get her.

Now, however, I’m starting to wonder if I might have been snookered.  You see, the Canadian band Walk Off The Earth just released a new video, a cover of The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face.  WOTE, as they’re known, rose to fame with their cover of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know performed by all five members of the band on a single guitar.  This new video, as so many of their videos do, features the vocals of Sarah Blackwood.  What sets this video apart from others is that during the recording and filming of the video, not only was she very pregnant, she was actually in labor.  Three hours after finishing, she gave birth to her son Luigi Colombo.

At this point, I’m thinking it wouldn’t have been too much for my wife to drive herself to the hospital when my daughter was about to be born.  What do you all think?  In any case, congratulations to Sarah Blackwood and Walk Off The Earth!

So what’s the craziest thing you’ve done while in labor or heard of someone else doing?  Let us know in the comments below!
