Keeping Track Of High School

I try to be an involved parent, I really do. It’s hard, though, when you spend most of your time trapped behind a little desk in a cluttered little office, doing things that have nothing to do with your kids. Fortunately, however, I can at least keep tabs on their schoolwork, even while sitting at my desk. Our school district has an online system where parents can view their student’s grades, assignments, and attendance.

With my older two in high school, I want to make sure they are taking the classes they need, not only to graduate, but to get accepted to the colleges of their choice. Further, as part of my efforts to keep their resumes up-to-date, I want to be able to calculate their grade point average. While it might seem like a simple matter of counting up their As, Bs, and so on, giving each a value, and dividing by the number of grades counted, it is actually more complicated than that.

Disrupting Graduation

It’s a time for Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance.  It’s a time for formal dances and the robes of academia.  For many, it signifies the end of childhood and the start of their adult life.  Graduation from high school is no minor event and should be treated with the reverence it deserves.  In Duncan, South Carolina, school officials and law enforcement are serious about making sure that’s the case.

Family Wants High School To Reschedule Graduation

Is this an outrageous request from an over-entitled soccer mom or a reasonable accommodation?  Janet Tener has asked that Clear Creek Amana High School, from which her son Zach is set to graduate with honors, to change the time of the graduation ceremony because their family has another event scheduled at the same time.  Now, before you rush to judge Mrs. Tener, be aware that it may not be so out-of-line as you might think.

Teaching The Bible In School

There’s no doubt that the bible has had a significant impact on human history.  The bible has inspired artists such as Michelangelo and Botticelli, composers like Bach and Vivaldi, and even authors like C.S. Lewis.  Although not strictly Christian concepts, we have the bible to thank for the popularity of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.  Of course, we also have the bible and related works to thank for the atrocities of the crusades, the Middle East conflicts and even, yes, the holocaust.  But should the bible be something taught in schools or is it best left for parents and priests to discuss?  One California school district thinks the bible’s influence is substantial enough to warrant teaching about it.
